Who Can Open SSY Account

  • Parents or legal guardians of a girl child
  • Girl child must be below 10 years of age at the time of account opening
  • Girl child must be a resident of India
  • Maximum 2 accounts per family (one for each girl child)
  • Third account allowed only in case of twin girls born after first girl child, or triplets
  • Guardian must have valid KYC documents (Aadhaar, PAN for amounts above ₹50,000)

Who Cannot Open SSY Account

  • Parents who already have 2 SSY accounts (except for twins/triplets)
  • NRI (Non-Resident Indian) parents cannot open new SSY account
  • Parents of girl child above 10 years of age
  • Parents who want to open account for a boy child (SSY is only for girl child)
  • If the girl child is already an NRI at the time of account opening

At Post Office

Partial Withdrawal

  • Up to 50% of the balance at the end of preceding financial year can be withdrawn
  • Allowed after girl child attains 18 years of age or passes 10th standard, whichever is earlier
  • Purpose: Higher education or marriage expenses
  • Withdrawal can be made in lump sum or installments (max 5 years, one per year)
  • Requires submission of admission proof or marriage invitation

Premature Closure

  • Allowed after girl turns 18: For marriage purposes (1 month before to 3 months after marriage)
  • Death of girl child: Full balance paid to guardian with death certificate
  • Extreme compassionate grounds: Life-threatening illness of girl child with medical certificate
  • Cannot close account before completion of 5 years from opening (except death/illness)
  • Closure forfeits future interest; only accumulated amount with past interest is paid
